Surplus Equipment

9-4-02

Many moons
ago someone told me of a program that the
USCG does about donating used water gear to poor depts. like mine. No SCUBA
or life safety stuff, but float coats, PFDs, etc. Do you happen to know
anything about this?

Thanks,

Check the Government web page for DRMS, Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service.  They dispose of Military and Fed surplus.  It used to be free to State and City government agencies and individuals could place bids on items in the inventory.

"We have had occasions to go out to a local military air base and see what
is available from there military surplus. They will donate any and all gear
that is 'surveyed" (decided unfit for military use) but useable for teams
(municipalities or state team use). This could be inflatables as well as
ridgid hull boats, OB motors, and other assorted items.  Contact the military
base nearest you to see if they have the ability to serve your team. They
will most likely transfer your call to the base supply command......good
luck!

Try your local US Customs Office, With the Blue lightning program we received a totally rebuilt 21 ft. Avon RIB, with 4 cyl. turbo diesel, Radar, Loran, VHF Marine radio and full USCG package to include Mustang PFD's. and trailer,  we kept it for 4 years on a loan program then they turned it over to our Dept. for the cost of paperwork (just under $600.) If you can get into the Blue Lightning program it will open a lot of doors for you also.

In reference to the DRMS, this is all I did for my department for over a
year, 1997-1998. Back then, and I still believe that it is in effect today,
all military property had to be justified for
counter-narcotic/counter-terrorism efforts by law enforcement. This is
pretty easy to do if you word the request just right. Through the program
our department received like new zodiac boats, pressure gauges, Viking dry
suits, boat motors, GPS equipment, fins, our dive vehicle a Chev. Surban,
and trailer,  you name it, and I probably got it. You have to pick through a
lot of junk, but there's some real jewels to be found.
If I can be of any assistance to anyone with this let me know.

You should have a state coordinator for surplus property. A good place to
start is:
Barbara A Anderson
Civil Agency Focal Point
(703) 767 1699
She was at Fort Belvoir, VA.. I'm not sure if she is still the person to
contact, but there should be someone there who can answer any questions and
sign you up.
If that doesn't work call the Law Enforcement Support Office at
1-800-532-9946.
Let me know how it goes,
